Economics and Statistics Administration (ESA) goes by the numbers. Its mission, to maintain the federal statistical system, explain the key forces at work in the economy, and support the needs of the Department of Commerce and the Executive Branch, is carried out by the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Economic Indicators.gov (monthly reports of principal economic indicators), and STAT-USA. The latter runs a subscription-based Web site with government business, economic, and statistical information along with foreign trade stats. President John F. Kennedy created ESA in 1961 to help form the country's economic policy.
