The All-American Bridge in Akron, Ohio, formally known as the Memorial Bridge[citation needed], is a viaduct carrying Ohio State Route 261 over the Little Cuyahoga River that splits into a one-way pair. Constructed in 1981,[1] the bridge is also locally known as Y-Bridge.
It replaced its predecessor, the North Hill Viaduct, after a collapse killed three in 1978. The poem Under The North Hill Viaduct was written by Rita Dove.
Over its 28-year existence, the bridge has been the site of at least one suicide a year (police records are incomplete).[2] In 2007, the Associated Press reported that the bridge was the site of 26 suicides in the previous ten years.[3] There were two suicides from the bridge in 2008 and two in the first six months of 2009.
In 2009, it was announced that $1 million to $1.5 million would be spent to fence the bridge using federal economic stimulus funds.[4] Fencing the bridge was controversial in Akron and the plan had previously failed to receive local support.[5][6] Previous local attempts to fence the bridge failed in 1991, 1993, 2000 and 2006.[7][8] The project is expected to be completed by September 2010.[1]
